I failed to evangelize

For some of you religious people who may be reading this, I apologize that the title is actually very misleading. Well, it’s not completely misleading, but because I work at a church it’s probably not about what you think it will be about.

Yesterday afternoon I had coffee with Keith, the college ministry director for HPPC. We had good conversation and I’m excited about getting to know Keith and his family more, but as I think back on our chat there is a part that bugs me…

We were talking about technology and Keith shared how he was thinking about starting to blog, but he couldn’t force himself to do it. He made the good point that it seems like a false community, and that  sitting down and talking with people was much better than keeping up with a bunch of blogs. He has a good point, but I think there’s also some healthy space for creativity and connectivity that’s not possible because of geography. Obviously, he just needed a little motivation yesterday. But I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t “seal the deal,” couldn’t convert him to blogging, couldn’t bring myself to even utter something to sway him. I’m a terrible evangelist.

Earlier in the day I had read this post, where this really jumped out:

The Evangelists
These are the zealots. They preach blogging like Salvation may be found. They check their stats a few times a day. They blog multiple times a day. They convert one new blogger a day. A lunch will not be had without some pitch about blogging being able to change ones life. From the very core. They know more about your life than you do. They Digg everyday. They YouTube everyday. They comment on 20 blogs at a time in order to stay in the loop. They read blogs only in RSS readers. More than likely, they have had a marital argument about blogging. I am one of these.

You should read the rest of the post to get the feel for blogging believers, seekers, the lost, and atheists. What I learned is that I’m probably more of a blogging believer than a blogging evangelist. Sheeesh. I should be ashamed of myself….

I remain agnostic. I don’t think anyone can prove or disprove that blogs exist.
