Can something have the appearance of life….
of growth…
of perfection…
of achievement,
and yet be devoid of any real hope…
or goodness…
or substance…
or power?
When I dwell on that it forces me to wrestle with what things we’ve worshipped and glorified that is hollow…
shallow,
fading,
temporal,
damaged,
or rotten.
We often worship façades. Images of something that are just straw men, set up for our enjoyment and self-reflection.
But redemption cannot come from within.
And we can’t truly worship that which is so familiar that it is often contemptible.
But darn if we don’t try.
What things do we find in the world, made in the image of power and success, that are really just homage paid to our pettiness and insecurity?
We understand power, worship, and freedom best when we allow ourselves to fade away. When we start to be absorbed into something bigger and better.
Something abnormal yet glorious.
The more we stand on our own, the more likely we are to be leaning on straw men.
They may last for a time, but they will fall.
They aren’t meant for redemption (the move towards wholeness).
They’re meant for our placation.
I wonder why we gravitate towards those things rather than towards redemption?
