One of the most personally striking moments in the life of Jesus is when he’s found overlooking the city of Jerusalem and he’s having a physical and emotional reaction to the brokenness of the City. Hear his words: Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the enemies will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation. Peace. Shalom. Whole-lifeness. Jesus, reminiscent of the calling of the people of Israel, understand well whats happen when the people stop seeking peace and lose their way. When we cheapen our calling or whore it out. When we substitute the grace of God with something cheap that our money can buy. When we trade mercy for self-preservation. Nations and people will battle and crumble over the inability to look beyond our borders. Where does Jesus go after this revelation? He starts toward the cross. Because God is on the move.
