- btaylor1978: teaching tonight on the three temptations of Jesus (Matthew 4). Fresh thoughts?
- mrcrowder: @btaylor1978 maybe the temptations are about Jesus as Second Israel?
- btaylor1978: @mrcrowder Excellent. Especially noticeable in the passages he chooses to quote from Deut. (all areas in which Israel failed)
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder you don't think it has ANYTHING to do w/ our temptation or do you just mean in it's origination it didn't?
- mrcrowder: @andrewsikora at best indirectly. The text is primarily about identification, in my opinion
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder I agree with you about the original meaning of the text but I believe Jesus' rejection of temptation can be seen as an example
- mrcrowder: @andrewsikora I believe it would be an exercise in missing the point. Unless you're tempted to take over the world?
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder so, when someone is facing temptation you would never suggest that remembering the truth of scripture would be helpful?
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder nor would you suggest that a reminder of God being the focus of our heart and mission be something to turn our thoughts toward
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder nor Jesus' rejection of the easy road & self glorification as a strong example if not blatant model for Kingdom living?
- mrcrowder: @andrewsikora I don't think Jesus was "slinging around the Sword," I think he was reliving (the correct way) the experiences of Israel
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder so if I am tempted you're telling me that I can learn nothing from how Jesus responds to these temptations?
- mrcrowder: @andrewsikora I think we should teach the point of Scripture. Let it inform us and shape us, but don't treat it like Aesop's Fables.
- andrewsikora: @mrcrowder ouch. bit of an extreme statement. I think it can do both at the same time. Maybe I'm wrong... but no cheap shots here.
- mrcrowder: @andrewsikora I have strong feelings about that one... sorry dude, it was cheap.
- andrewsikora: I know it's not THE point but there's more you can learn in all of scripture. We can learn about love in how Jesus deals w/ sin
- mrcrowder: well yeah it makes sense then but that's about the broadest angle you can take on it. it's not the point...
- andrewsikora: but it's not the point. I get that. We can learn about faithfulness in the way Jesus goes to the cross but still not the point
- andrewsikora: It's not missing the point... it's seeing the point and unpacking all it's implications. don't you think there's truth in that?
- mrcrowder: it's possible I just struggle with it being taught that way, ever
- andrewsikora: dude, you teach it that way I'm sure. Paul did too. We need to talk more on the phone about it.
- mrcrowder: Paul taught it for identification
- andrewsikora: explain identification and give examples of Paul doing so
- mrcrowder: I may blog about it.
